The new building complex of Jeju Seonheul Church is located in a small village in the Gotjawal area of Jeju. The triangular-shaped site, which is long from north to south, is lower toward the north side. An education center already exists on this site, and the church is trying to create a new complex by arranging four small buildings here.
We tried to foster the church community in architecture through the relationship between the continuously arranged group of buildings and the courtyards they create. As a result, masses and void fields are combined with each program and are integrated while having individual characteristics.
The central courtyard is the central external space of the church, allowing communication with public spaces while facing the worship hall, dining room, and multi-purpose hall. In addition, the yard on the west side of the chapel is a static area, and the front yard of the dormitory is reinforced as a private garden.
In order to emphasize the formative unification of the whole building group and the main spaces such as the chapel, a pyramid-shaped roof was applied in a different way. The pyramid-shaped roof also creates a spiritual atmosphere by allowing light into the interior through the skylight. In addition, a lively, continuous brick pattern was applied to the exterior elevation of the ground floor to give people a sense of unity in their spatial experience. And, the main rooms were opened to the outside through large glass windows, and the windows of the individual rooms were made in a variety of configurations in response to the sense of proportion of the building facade so that people could experience the space in a friendly way.
This church is a group consisting of several buildings and the courtyards they create. We believe that this complex will be a place where people can meet, interact and develop their faith, embracing the various programs of the church community both inside and outside.
